Product Development Engineer

Summary

The Product Development Engineer is responsible for all aspects of new product design and existing product improvement, including the conceptual development, design, validation testing, documentation, manufacturability, implementation into production and product improvements to keep product relevant in market.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  • Reporting to the Head of Merrill Tool and Water Jet Specialty Products, the Product Development Engineer will support all aspects of new product design and improvement. This includes the design, development, documentation, manufacturability, and implementation into production.

  • The Product Development Engineer is responsible for leading the design process concurrently with quality, manufacturing, purchasing, inventory control and sales departments.

  • Concept proposal

  • Enter information in the company ERP to convey proper instruction to manufacturing.

  • Project Management of product design projects.

  • Product definition through engineering drawings and specifications.

  • Support development and maintenance of bill of materials.

  • Assist with first article inspections (FAI) of prototype parts.

  • Research new suppliers and technology needed to support product development

  • Place Purchase Order’s for components as needed.

  • Direct the testing and prototyping activities

  • Evaluate product effectiveness on and off site and provide direction on or take the necessary corrective actions

  • Work with customer to facilitate sales

  • Work with customers to resolve issues as they arise

 

Knowledge and Skill

Education generally equivalent Mechanical Engineering Degree of Associates Degree plus three to five years related experience. Experience in lieu of a degree will be considered, experience in product development is highly valued. 

  • Three to five years of engineering related experience is required; additional project management experience is preferred.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents, such as technical specifications, professional journals, test reports and drawings.

  • Ability to write technical reports, service manuals, owner’s manuals, and other types of technical product documentation.

  • Critical & Analytical Thinking – is able to analyze a problem logically and propose solutions, where only limited standardization exists.

  • Initiative & Motivation – engages in proactive behavior and seeks opportunities for improvement.

  • An effective team player.

  • Strong awareness of the wants and needs of the customer, and a desire to deliver them.

  • Previous experience using SolidWorks, or a similar parametric modeling software.

  • Previous experience using an ERP system; knowledge of JobBoss is preferred.

  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with vendors, customers, and fellow employees.
